The future of pop-up hackspaces is… dumpsters?

Hackerspaces are a driving force in the hacker community. These spaces, loosely related to the makerspaces and FabLabs seen in the world of digital fabrication, provide opportunities for people in the communities around them to learn and use DIY skills. Finding locations for these public spaces can be tricky, though, particularly in larger cities. Enter the pop-up hackerspace. New York City’s Department of Urban Betterment has created just such a space using an inflatable “lab” that is anchored by a streetside construction dumpster. David Lumb at Fast Company takes a closer look.
